Building a room around a rug is one of our favorite pastimes, and it seems like the seating always falls into place second. Whether your rug pattern is intricate, with several different colors from which to make a match, or involves only unassuming neutrals, there is never just one chair that will work. Options for matching rugs with chairs are as wide open as your sense of adventure. A weathered bar stool with a farmhouse feel may suit a soft grey wool rug just as well as an urban chic white metal stool - the decision lies with your overall style goals.
We constantly add rugs in many engaging colors and patterns to our offerings. Most of our indoor/outdoor rugs have a varied, hand-tufted loop construction which gives them a soft yet durable texture. The bold orange of the Tangerine Stripe Indoor/Outdoor Rug pairs perfectly with the Chippendale look Bamboo Club Chair, shown in Mandarin. This classy rattan chair with leather bindings comes in over 40 paint colors. The eye-catching Ravenna Indoor/Outdoor Rug in a tile print is shown with two color choices for the Grenada Ladderback Side Chair, which is also available as a barstool. The Chekat Grey Micro Hooked Rug also has a bold pattern, but comes in wool with a low profile, making it perfect for high-traffic areas. Paired with this chevron pattern rug is the Bridgetown Stool, which comes in two heights and 11 color choices, including one stain and one weathered look finish. All of our featured rugs are also available as runners.

[post_content] => Do you feel like keeping all the familiar traditions of the holiday but making a change to keep this special time fresh and exciting? Well, red and green called and they can't make it this year. Explore white, a great choice for holiday decorating, especially if you find yourself somewhere without a snowy forecast.White, if done right, will warm the heart rather than bring on a chill. The living room above with its rustic light wood walls comes quietly alive amidst the mix of soft neutrals. Using subtle variations of tint as well as a profusion of different textures is the key to making things cozy. Ornaments in ivory, linen and snow white mixed together will create subtle depth and interest. Mix white textiles with abandon: pair beaded and brocade stockings, silky tree skirts, cable knit throws and lacy pillows -- you can go for a bit of gold fringe if you want to indulge. Even white paper China balls that have little affiliation with the holidays fall in line with the color scheme and add to the festive mix.

As colder weather nears, we couldn't decide whether we were more drawn to the idea of the comforts of indoors outside or the hallmarks of outdoors inside, so we married the two scenarios in our Rooms to Love. Equally appealing to the homebody in us all, the fireplaced farmhouse living room and lodge porch above both offer rusticity as well as small touches of welcome luxury.
Hunker down by the fireplace in this farmhouse living room in an overstuffed armchair resplendent with cushy pillows in a stag motif. What sets this room apart is that despite the stark whitewashed hearth and exposed beams, the space crackles with warmth from the woodsy stash of fire logs, the honeyed antique trunk coffee table and the wreathlike antler design mirror. On the other hand, an outdoor lounging area fit for a tsar betrays none of its wintry temperature as long as the candles glow and the wood benches and chairs are covered in faux rabbit fur. These plush accessories take off the chill and make this lodge style porch one to lounge on in all seasons rather than to only pass through. Softening the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces can create a feeling of integration and fluidity as well as alter your perspective on coziness.

[post_content] => A coastal cottage living room turned out in soothing neutral tones like the one above provides a welcome everyday retreat. An understated sand color on the walls sets the overall tone and is echoed in the natural area rug, throw pillows and fireplace tiles. White painted moldings provide a subtle contrast. A comfortable mood deepens with graduated tones from cafe au lait pillows, mink brown cushions, and rustic dark wood pieces such as the driftwood mirror and table. The added beauty of this room is that its low-profile disposition serves as the perfect foundation for changing seasonal decor. A neutral base can easily be dressed up and down for any occasion, especially at the holidays. Just as natural elements like smooth stones on the hearth and seagrass upon the mantel add a coastal twist to this comfy cottage style, this room could easily be readied for Thanksgiving guests with some gourds and corncobs and substituting an orange or harvest gold area rug. Adding deep red velvet pillows and some berries and evergreen boughs on the mantel would in turn set the scene for festive winter meetings. And when spring returns, adding pussy willows, striped pillows in chambray blue and a white painted table in lieu of the driftwood one can freshen the look.

[post_content] => Imagine enjoying a nature walk and finding yourself in an unfamiliar part of the woods just as twilight falls. Suddenly you emerge from the trees to see the glow of a fire in the window of a farmhouse and hear friendly shouted greetings. Welcome to the unfussy farmhouse above, where you are ushered into a century-old living room boasting richly stained original built-ins and a quaint whitewashed brick fireplace. You're given the seat of honor next to the fire, in an antique armchair with plush persimmon upholstery, and handed a drink and an old book to peruse while the owners whip up a hearty supper in the next room. One can dream...This soothing refuge boasts the midnight blue of a mid-autumn evening on the walls, punctuated by plucky orange-red and cinnamon woodwork and floors. A few bright spots of white, namely the slipcovered sofa and painted brickwork, serve to balance the deeply restful mood created by dark blue. Details like the beadboard-backed bookcase and granite hearth reinforce a unique nostalgia, and timelessness supersedes the fad of the moment to make a comfortably classic sitting area. Individuality shines through as the butterfly theme of the print on the mantel is echoed in the throw pillows, and according to preference, this room could change up quite easily with the introduction of a new slipcover or plaid or floral accessories.

Like the verdant orange groves of the Spanish countryside, the mossy green tiles in this country cottage living room call to mind bountiful harvests and time-honored traditions. French doors with Moorish arches open to a sunny courtyard, while a hooded fireplace with moulding guarantees comfort for grey days. A natural fiber rug and low, movable seats blend with wood and leather for a rustic yet refined comfort. We love how the classic cottageness of this living room is embellished with Mediterranean touches such as scrolling sconces and exotic tiled floors.

1. Tin Ladder Stripe Rug | 2. Sandstone Rug | 3. Brentwood Entertainment Console | 4. Seurat Neutral Wool Rug | 5. Hickory Wool Rug
Sliding into autumn, the grey-brown bark of a silent oak topped by startling golden and caramel leaves prompts us to explore an infrequent pairing: taupe and honey. Taupe, a greyish brown (or a brownish grey?), exudes a steely sophistication, while honey triggers a primal warmth on sight. The two colors may at first seem like old schoolmates who haven't talked in a while, but once you bridge the tonal gap with a little ivory or cream the two colors start to really reconnect.
Shown here in both Taupe and Honey, the Brentwood Entertainment Console is also available in 25 other finishes. A distinctive and versatile piece, it will fit right into your cottage living room, dining room, office or even bedroom. Its medallion-embellished doors call to mind an antique tin ceiling, while its faux bamboo frame adds a bit of exoticism. With an adjustable interior shelf, this long and lean storage unit can serve many purposes. We can't decide which color we like best, so we've pictured them both along with four wool rugs to illustrate the possibilities.

Casting a tropical temperament over your cottage living room is easy by introducing some citrus green. Citrus green calls to mind palm fronds, exotic parrots and even lime-infused drinks, serving as a perfect mood booster. When the warmer days start slipping away, the blow can be softened by recreating a summery environment inside. Pairing bright white painted furniture with this leafy green creates a crisp counterpoint and a cottage look. Adding light wood accents such as a lamp table or a coffee table with a stained top can also add a slight touch of warmth to the decor.
Our Inspiration Board shows some cottage pieces in the top half and a slightly more formal seating ensemble on the bottom half. Tying the two looks together is the classic houndstooth patterned Checks Green Woven Cotton Rug. Our featured sofa and armchairs both come from our popular Summer House Furniture Collection, with over 350 available fabric options. Adorably styled, the Harwich Upholstered Sofa is also available in a loveseat, and the sleek St. Simons Leather Chairs (with over 55 leather choices) also come in a swivel option. Our occasional tables can both be finished in several standard paints and stain combinations, and in addition, the Barn Wood Cricket Table is in reclaimed wood and the height is customizable.

As the unofficial end of the summer season draws near, we aren't quite ready to let go... and this converted attic room is just the remedy. A profusion of blues, aquas and whites along with nautical nostalgia provides a quaint hideaway at the end of a day filled with outdoor activities. Covering the main barnboard wall are paintings of grand ships a-sail, salty old skippers, technical sketches and silhouettes. The shipshape sofa creates an unassuming base for comfort while retro and refined matching tufted seats provide a seating twist. The tables are sturdy and unique, possibly flea market finds, not to mention the numerous kitsch mariner statuettes and knick-knacks. The modern lighting fixtures near the peak of the ceiling bring to mind bubbles escaping the roiling waves.
This cozy arrangement could also work in a covered porch area, preferably one with exposed beams. If your nautical wall art collection has not reached this level, you could easily take up half the wall with painted white beadboard or weathered shiplap. This room shows its wooden floors to full advantage, but the furniture could also be drawn together with an area rug, possibly a hand-me-down Oriental or a sun-bleached natural fiber rug. And of course the color scheme can be changed up on a whim by changing out the sofa slipcover and incorporating other throw pillows.

This week we pay tribute to the Red, White and Blue, the winsome and revered trio of colors in the United States flag. Just as this nation is a mix of ethnicities and creeds, our picks above represent a spectrum of styles, shades and tastes, from traditional to edgy decor. From bold, billowy patterns to reserved stripes and solids. . . From understated hues to bold primaries. . . . From white with navy and cherry red to variations such as turquoise and persimmon. . . From a nautical bent to an exotic vibe. . . These rooms all make a patriotic statement, yet can definitely also fit into your everyday repertoire. Happy 4th of July to everyone!
How do you red, white and blue?

Sky and sun, bluebells and buttercups, faded jeans and wheat fields. . . From azure to aqua and mustard to maize, blue and yellow is just one of the happiest combinations around. These two colors, one cool and one warm, do their best to show one another off. A master at pulling everything together above, the Gypsy Stripe Denim/Yellow Woven Cotton Rug meshes golden yellow with indigo and cornflower as well as a hint of chocolate and ivory.
For this casual cottage look, add a pair of the compactly curvaceous Avon Upholstered Accent Chairs with this woven multi-color rug. We also love the idea of mixing in a cheery yellow Lake Murray Bench, suitable for your porch, kitchen, living room or anywhere you need extra seating. We've also selected a neutral Kerr Coffee Table with similar curves as the bench, both from our popular Lake House Furniture Collection. Lastly, the Five Skippers at SeaCanvas Giclee picks up tones from the rug and casts a serenity over the ensemble.
What is your favorite duo of colors?

Red and green called and they can’t make it this year. Explore white, a great choice for holiday decorating, especially if you find yourself somewhere without a snowy forecast. #whitechristmas #cottagechristmas https://www.cottagehomefurniture.com/
As colder weather nears, we couldn’t decide whether we were more drawn to the idea of the comforts of indoors outside or the hallmarks of outdoors inside, so we married the two scenarios in our Rooms to Love. Equally appealing to the homebody in us all, the fireplaced farmhouse living room and lodge porch above […]
A coastal cottage living room turned out in soothing neutral tones like the one above provides a welcome everyday retreat. The added beauty of this room is that its low-profile disposition serves as the perfect foundation for changing seasonal decor. Just as natural elements like smooth stones on the hearth and seagrass upon the mantel […]
Ushered into a century-old farmhouse living room boasting richly stained original built-ins and a quaint whitewashed brick fireplace, you’re given the seat of honor next to the fire – an antique armchair with plush persimmon upholstery. A beadboard-backed bookcase and granite hearth reinforce a unique nostalgia, and timelessness supersedes the fad of the moment to […]
Like the verdant orange groves of the Spanish countryside, the mossy green tiles in this country cottage living room call to mind bountiful harvests and time-honored traditions. French doors with Moorish arches open to a sunny courtyard, while a hooded fireplace with moulding guarantees comfort for grey days. A natural fiber rug and low, movable […]
Sliding into autumn, the grey-brown bark of a silent oak topped by startling golden and caramel leaves prompts us to explore an infrequent pairing: taupe and honey. Taupe, exudes a steely sophistication, while honey triggers a primal warmth on sight. Bridge the tonal gap with ivory or cream the two colors start to really connect. […]
#greens #whites […]
As the unofficial end of the summer season draws near, we aren’t quite ready to let go… and this converted attic room is just the remedy. Covering the main barnboard wall are paintings of grand ships asail. salty old skippers, technical sketches and silhouettes. The shipshape sofa creates an unassuming base for comfort while retro […]
The Regatta Stripe Indoor/Outdoor Rug captures the best of summer in its bold navy, cornflower, red and white stripes. Bringing to mind the open seas, crisp white sails and nautical pennants whipping in the wind, it looks dashing both with a leather sofa and ottoman bench and in an edgy kitchen with steel and wood […]
