Both driftwood and white washed furniture finishes are gaining popularity and demand in today's decorating trends.  Whether it is a modern living room, or a rustic dining room, these finishes fit in everywhere.  The "washed" look is made by using a watered down and thinned paint, so that when it is applied, the natural wood grain will show through.  It is a perfect solution for those who want to see the texture and character of a hardwood piece, but aesthetically want to incorporate painted pieces, versus stained, into their decor.  Here is a close up example of what these treatments may look like:


The beauty of both of these finishes is that they act as a neutral tone that you can build an entire room around.  Here are two examples of how to put together a fashionable look using these foundation finishes!

In the whitewash dining room, the soft blue tones of the rug and throw pillows accent the crisp, clean white finishes beautifully.  Everything has an ethereal quality that makes it stylish and fresh.  The coral artwork adds a hint of ocean life for a unique coastal element.

We always love seeing a space where different styles come together for a reinvented look, and that's why we adore this eclectic French Country cottage.  The architecture, with the wrap around floor to ceiling windows, creates a dramatic backdrop and is off set beautifully by the natural pine paneled ceilings.  Continuing the warm wood tone motif, the traditional style occasional tables are made of reclaimed wood for a splash of rustic charm.

You customarily see layers of blue and yellow in French Country decor, and this is no exception. 				Spring is here, and with the blooming of buds on the trees and flowers in our gardens, here at Cottage Home we are inspired to bring that color inside! It's time to shed the wool blankets, kick off the slippers, and get decorating for spring.

A very easy and effective way to transition your living room from Winter neutrals to Summer color is to swap out the accessories. It's as easy as replacing, or adding, colorful throw pillows to your sofa or swapping out your lamps for a pop of color. Also, think about choosing a less expensive throw rug to swap out periodically versus investing in a more expensive area rug. Or even layer your rugs to create a dynamic look. Here is an example of a winter to summer look in no time:
