Material

Wood: Alder hardwood.

Alder is considered a soft hardwood, but has a medium-density, making it both lightweight and strong. It has properties like stiffness, shock resistance, and low bending strength. It has the highest hardwood lumber grade, with an impressive 83% clear face. It is very durable and therefore is a good choice for cabinet doors. The grain is straight, and the texture is uniform.

A relative of birch, alder is almost white when freshly cut, but quickly changes with exposure to air, becoming light brown with a yellow or reddish tinge. Even though alder can be considered by some to be bland with no real character, it can be impressive when stained and lacquered. Stain sinks readily into its open pores, and little stain is required to reflect a different character. The open pores of alder also lend to the easy application of lacquer coats. Lacquer penetrates alder fast and hardens inside the pores to provide a glassy coating.

Alder trees grow exceptionally fast and quickly grow up to one meter (three feet) per year. In terms of sustainable forest management, forests that are dominated by Alder trees can be harvested more often through coppice forestry methods. Alder wood grows throughout most of the United States and is readily adaptable to most climatic regions in the country. Eight species of Alder are native to the United States. The ability to source high-quality hardwood lumber that can grow close to home is a great strategy to reduce the carbon footprint associated with the materials in your home.

Alder wood is a raw product of nature. The grain patterns, knots, and color variations give each piece a unique charm. We are unable to control the placement of knots, grain patterns, texture and the expansion and contraction of wood. Small seasonal splits are common.

Drawer Glides: Full-extension ball bearing drawer glides, 100# rating per pair.

Metal frames: Hand forged cast iron.

Finishes

Standard Colors: 8 stains, 19 paint. Clear Top Coat. Not available with custom colors. All pieces are also available unfinished.

Painted Finishes – Artisans hand-apply our painted finishes in multiple layers of stain and lacquer to create well-worn charm and sophistication. We use antiquing techniques, including dry brushing and hand rubbing of edges, to reveal undertones of stain and texture. All painted finishes will patina over time.

Stained Finishes – Stain finishes have multiple layers of hand applied stains and clear lacquers. Our antiquing process uses dry brushing and hand distressing with chains, wormholes, and other tools to mimic a natural worn piece of furniture with a satin patina.

Metal hardware is available unpainted or painted. All pieces are available without hardware and no drilled holes.

Distressing

Standard Distressing: Our antiquing process uses dry brushing and hand distressing with chains, wormholes, and other tools to mimic a natural worn piece of furniture with a satin patina. Painted finishes will have rubbed edges.

Minimal Distressing: We add no distressing to these lacquer finishes. Natural imperfections in the wood, such as wood grains and any other characteristics of natural wood formations, add distinctive texture. Painted finishes will not have rubbed edges,

Select painted colors and painted metallic finishes are only available as minimally distressed finishes including blueberry, red hot and lemon yellow.

The balance of painted colors and stains are standard with Standard Distressing. They are also optionally available as Minimally Distressed (no hand distressing, no rub on painted finishes but with wood grains and imperfections visible).

Care

It is natural for the patina to change over time. You can help protect your furniture by NOT placing furniture in direct sunlight. Avoid extreme temperatures, harsh cleaners, candle wax, oil diffusers and ink. It takes the lacquer up to one year to fully cure.

For any type of spill, immediately wipe off the area with a soft, dry cloth. Small, superficial scratches or minor marks may be touched up using the finest steel wool possible (#0000). Using the pad, wipe gently in the direction of the grain. Then, apply a furniture wax such as Guardsman products, Briwax or Trewax.

If you place a wet substance on the furniture and a salamander ring appears, remove the wet item immediately. The lacquer needs to breathe. Once exposed to the air for a day, the cloudy water ring should disappear.
