Do you love the look of natural fiber rugs, but are unsure of which kind would work for your home? If so, here are a few tips to help you find the right natural fiber (or alternative) rug to achieve the look you want:
Real 100% sisal rugs are beautiful, but they do have some maintenance requirements you should know before purchasing.
All spills will stain the rug, but there are ways to minimize the visibility of the stain. Because water can even stain sisal, use the least amount of liquid when spot cleaning. You want to use ammonia, vinegar, or detergent, depending on the stain, in a spray bottle diluted with warm water. Then you can lightly mist the solvent on the stain, blot and repeat until stain has lessened.
Sisal has a course fiber consistency, so it's not the most comfortable selection for living rooms or bedrooms where you will be shoe-less. But if you are okay with the coarse texture, than these are the most durable option for high traffic areas.
Natural Fibers - Wool
Wool rugs are available in a multitude of neutral shades and fiber consistencies. Wool pile, or wool looped rugs, are a great solution for creating a natural look.
Synthetic fiber neutral rugs have a similar look to sisal and jute, but a very different feel. They tend to be thinner in pile, but the durability and practicality are priceless.
These often come available with a fabric border to jazz up the look.
Made of 100% polypropylene material, you can literally hose them off outside and let them dry in the sun when there are spills.
The low pile makes it easy for cleaning and vacuuming.
Whatever material you choose, make sure you check with the manufacturer for specific cleaning instructions that you can follow to stay within a rug's warranty. Brought to you by Cottage Home - specializing in cottage furniture & farmhouse tables

We wanted to share with you, all of our faithful readers, that September marks our One Year Milestone! We couldn't be more excited to celebrate this momentous occasion. And what better way to celebrate than to look back on all of our favorite articles, projects, posts, and cumulative creativity that this blog has shared over the past twelve months. The Distinctive Cottage is proud to be able to continually expand on our original mission: to create, inspire, share, and highlight ideas & trends about living beautifully in today's home. Here are a few of our favorites to recap a spectacular year in the world of home decorating!
This was the first of manyStaff Picks! We often encounter customers who want a coastal look without being "over the top nautical". Jennifer's Favoritesis a perfect example of how to create and capture an ocean-inspired theme without cluttering every nook and cranny with seashells. The colors in this space are the perfect interpretation of the sea, sandy beaches, and natural driftwood.
This was a really fun project, and a great example of one of our long distance design projects. Our store is located in Cape Neddick, Maine and we work with clients all across the country. It's amazing what you can accomplish through emails, photos, videos and phone calls. This project was for a couple that live near New York City, and needed a little help making their patio and backyard into a functional extension of their home. Click hereto find out more about the creative and space-saving suggestions we gave them!
To help our readers recreate a room from an inspiration photo, we introduced "Get The Look". By clicking on any image you will find where to find the piece, and any custom options that may be available, including changing the color! These fun and inspiring posts take the guesswork out of putting together a beautiful room.
A key part of re-decorating is to first find inspiration photos to get your creative energy flowing. That is why we created "Rooms to Love," to help you find photos that will inspire a fresh perspective. It can be very difficult to express your own decor style; by collecting inspiration photos you love, it can help you identify what elements you want to re-create in your own home. With each of these posts, we include an overview of the space, why it works, and identify the key design elements that make it unique.
We love putting together these inspiration boards, to do just that, inspire our readers! Textiles, lighting, finishes and accessories are all highlighted around a central theme or color(s). We typically start with a rug, or a pillow that we LOVE and work around the inspiration piece to create a complete look. All we need now are a couple of beverages and a delicious meal to enjoy this backyard dining experience!
Each month we post a design tip and a featured article to explore specific topics in the world of interior decorating. In order to create reliable, informative, and relateable articles we combine research and personal experience! So much of decorating can be trial and error, and we want to share our experiences and knowledge with you to help save time and money!
Want to see unique and creative color concepts? Come check out our color boards! They are a great way to help brainstorm colors you might like and combinations that will be stunning! Anytime we use Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams colors we will label them, so you can head right to the store.
Thank you to all of our dedicated readers who continue to support our blog, and we hope you are enjoying it as much as we are!

Filling a blank wall can be a daunting task, but what better way to fill a blank space than with the things you love? By collaging items together into a cohesive statement, you create visual interest while also expressing a little bit about who you are.
A great starting point is deciding what kind of look you want to achieve. Is it a symmetrical, traditional and classic look, or an asymmetrical, funky and abstract look?Determining what style fits in with the space allows you to then begin to decide what you want to include in the collage and how it will be arranged. Here are a few helpful hints to get you started.
Good Rule of Thumb:
Same Sized Images and
Same Frame Style
Creating a symmetrical configuration is a crisp and clean way to collage artwork. This homeowner chose the same frame color and similar types of photos for a themed focal point. The large collage in this upscale dining room is a perfect choice to keep in harmony with the room's decor. The snow white frames mimic the crisp white trim and window treatments, while the soft beige background ties in with the sisal rug. The floral images contribute to the botanical theme of the room, while offering a soft and feminine feature. The configuration of five columns in four rows is well-balanced and fills the blank wall perfectly without feeling overcrowded.
Good Rule of Thumb:
Different Sized Images and
Same Frame Style
Here is a perfect example of cohesive asymmetry for a gallery wall. The creator used similar white frames to outline the miscellaneous collection of inspiring artwork and personal photos. Maintaining a unifying element throughout the collage, in this case the white frames, brings the whole look together.Notice how the outlets and the temperature gauges hide seamlessly among the artwork!
Good Rule of Thumb:
Same Sized Images and
Different Frame Colors
This cute nook of photos is another version of a symmetrical collage, which has the same sized frame, but in different colors to add diversity. The border is even and the edges of each frame concise, while the varying colors create an eye catching pop.
Good Rule of Thumb: Different Sized Images and Different Frame Styles
If you want a really eclectic collage you can mix a variety of images and objects together to achieve a clustered asymmetrical look. This is a free flowing collage style, and the overall size is determined by the objects you choose. What's nice about this style is that you can add and change it with ease since there is no set arrangement. This clustered collage has a great variety of whimsical pieces, including painted canvases, rustic frames, and graphic block letters. The soft and quiet colors look great against the pewter walls!
The most important rule of thumb when creating your own gallery collage is to have fun! This is a design project that allows you to dictate what you want to see featured on your walls. Choose items that share memories, inspire you, motivate you, and ultimately make you happy. It's an opportunity to express the people, places, and things you love.

Pets are a huge part of our families; they bring joy and happiness to our lives and to our homes. With our pets in mind, we consider some pet friendly decorating tips to create a home that is suitable for their active lifestyles, yet doesn't sacrifice comfort or style in the process. It is all about choosing materials, especially fabrics, that will accommodate the inevitable wear and tear from our furry friends. Here are a few tips to help you create pet-friendly environments for the two rooms most frequently visited by paws - the entryway and the family room. The entryway into your home can take a lot of abuse, not only from people, but pets as well. It is the first area in the house where animals come in from the outside and shake off from rain, snow, mud, and dirt. First, eliminate any materials where odors will be captured. Carpeting will soak up odors, dander, hair will stick, and any "accidents" will be soaked into the carpet as well as the padding. Wood, tile, cement, or other sealed flooring are the best choices for easy upkeep, including vacuuming, mopping, and sweeping. Tile or cement are both nice choices for warmer climates, because either material creates a cool spot for your pet to lay low and escape the heat. With wood flooring, you have multiple options with different price tags, but most homes have pine, mahogany, red oak or maple floors. Wood offers warmth and natural character, as the grains vary from board to board. Wood is a penetrable material, so scratching from your pets’ long nails can occur. It is best to keep their nails short to reduce damage to the floors.Remember to have a designated mat where pets can wipe their paws. Choose mats that are made of coarse synthetic fibers that will hold up to tough wear and will catch loose dirt. The family room is where pets and people love to gather for relaxing, lounging, and spending time together. Choosing fabrics and furnishings that support these activities creates a low key and happy place for everyone in the family.Laying the foundation is first and foremost: the area rug! Some key concerns when choosing the right area rug for your pets - Is it easy to clean? Does it have a tight weave? Will it stay in place with high traffic? Choose a rug that has clear care instructions on what cleaning products are okay to use to spot-clean. Try to avoid rugs that are dry clean only. Synthetic fiber rugs are just as good as natural fiber rugs, and tend to be a little less expensive. Depending on the blend type, they can even be a better choice for heavy traffic areas because of their durable and stain-resistant nature. The weave type of the rug is also significant if you have animals that tend to knead or dig a lot. Their nails will create pulls and separations in the rug that will lead to constant rug replacements. Choose rugs with a tight closed weave, and avoid options that have loose or knitted textures.Keeping the rug in place is an additional factor to consider, because a family room with pets is destined to become a play area! Investing in a high-quality grip rug pad is recommended for any type of rug to help keep it in place. When choosing sofas & chairs for the family room, consider slipcovered frames versus upholstered frames. A slipcover allows for much more flexibility for easy cleaning and is easier to replace when the time comes. Some people shy away from slipcovers because they want a more tailored look, but not all slipcovers have to be loose and ill fitting. Look for a heavier weighted fabric that will keep its shape when draped. A welt, or piping, around the frame also helps to give a slipcovered piece more structure. With either slipcovered or upholstered pieces, just like rugs, choose fabric material that is easy-to-clean and durable. As we all know, no matter how much we try to keep our pets off the furniture, it's the first, and last, place they want to sleep!

Every April, Earth Day reminds us to appreciate the beauty of the world around us, and how much we need to protect and preserve it. Our earth provides us with tangible necessities to live, like air, water, and food, but it also provides us with a constant intangible resource, it's beauty. For centuries, that beauty has provided artists and designers alike with inspiration from luscious landscapes, magnificent mountains, and roaring seas.
The colors found in nature are endless, and are consistently sought after as the inspirational palette in peoples' homes. Filling your home with earth tones creates a feeling of the outdoors coming in, and a more natural living environment. They also create a sense of serenity, calmness, and ease, which is an invaluable setting for a place to call home.

Feeling Bold? Try combining any of these saturated jewel tones to create a colorful cottage decorating scheme. Set the tone by choosing the diamond print in the center as a rug. Then the rest of the prints and colors on the board can be used for upholstery and painted pieces!

Looking back on the year 2012, a few key cottage decorating trends come to mind. Let's take a trip down memory lane of all the exciting products and color schemes that made a memorable year in cottage decor.
Industrial Lighting and Accents made of materials like brass, aluminum, copper, and antique nickel add a touch of contemporary class. Using these materials in lighting fixtures creates a soft glow that warms any space.
Coral and Turquoise made a splash in coastal homes this year because of the fun loving and vibrant effect it has on any room. Pinky coral hues are reminiscent of the sunset, while turquoise transports you to a Caribbean sea. It is easy to feel the tropical wind in your hair surrounded by these beautiful colors.
Gray and White Washed Furniture bring in an old world charm that will never go out of style. Choose one or two pieces with a washed painted finish to add character and introduce a rustic element.
Driftwood Accessories and twig furniture are a fantastic way to bring in a weathered look to your cottage home. It is a sculptural and more abstract way of bringing in coastal elements, by playing with form and texture. Using raw and organic materials is only gaining in popularity and recognition as a must have for any home.
Graphic Prints, like the chevron and diamond, look great in many applications. Whether in pillows, blankets, or rugs, it adds a punch of visual interest with a modern look.
Grey and Yellow are a match made in heaven, because of their balancing properties. Grey tends to be a sleek and modern color used to create a cool tone to a space, whereas yellow tends to be a lively and energetic color. By pairing them, you can create a fun loving and contemporary look.

Today’s front and back entryways seem to be a source of clutter, extra "stuff", and disorganization for most homes! It is a natural drop off station, a place for reminders as you are coming and going, and where hats/mittens/coats/shoes stack up all year round. It is no wonder clutter and chaos can quickly occur in a busy household. Here are a few helpful hints to create a practical, organized, and aesthetically pleasing mudroom:
The First Impression: An important starting point in re-organizing your entry way is to identify what kind of first impression you want to create for your home. Choose a color palette that will enhance the desired feeling and that will blend into the rest of the home effortlessly.

Practical Pieces: Brainstorm what you want functionally from your mudroom, how much storage you need, and what things in particular you will need to store on a daily basis. Then choose pieces that will support those functions for easier everyday living. By planning ahead and finding the right pieces for you makes all the difference in creating an efficient space that will be easier to remain in working order. You can also combine open storage and closed storage for a more interesting array of pieces. A good example of a sensibly chic piece would be a slipcovered bench, which adds an inviting touch, while also offering a useful place for sliding shoes on. And don’t forget all of the small things that need a home too! Set up a spot for keys, wallets, phones and all other important necessities.

Operational Accents: Use baskets to create a casual and versatile storage solution that can be tucked in anywhere. Underneath an open based console table or buffet is a perfect place for added storage. Also, choose a rug that will hold up against the constant foot traffic that traipses through the door. There are great indoor/outdoor rugs made of 100% polypropylene that won’t break the bank. These rugs are easy to clean as they are hoseable, scrubbable and bleachable.
