We wanted to share with you, all of our faithful readers, that September marks our One Year Milestone! We couldn’t be more excited to celebrate this momentous occasion. And what better way to celebrate than to look back on all of our favorite articles, projects, posts, and cumulative creativity that this blog has shared over the past twelve months. The Distinctive Cottage is proud to be able to continually expand on our original mission: to create, inspire, share, and highlight ideas & trends about living beautifully in today’s home. Here are a few of our favorites to recap a spectacular year in the world of home decorating!
Depending on the amount of red or blue it contains, yellow can have many different color personalities, making decorating with yellow easy in any room. A yellow that has a red undertone creates a warm and welcoming feeling, and are best used on larger pieces of furniture, such as the bed pictured, and walls. A yellow that contains an undertone of blue has a cooler effect and should be used on small pieces of furniture, such as the end table pictured. Buttery yellows, such as the upholstery pieces pictured, can really be used anywhere because they provide a neutral feeling in a room. Experiment with different shades of yellow to see what works for you and your home!
This is a family room outfitted for comfort, fun, and togetherness! With the large overstuffed sectional, everyone gets a comfy seat for movie night or room to gather around the large coffee table for game night. Whatever the occasion, this living room has plenty of seating, so everyone can find a cozy spot. The tall wainscotting is a cottage style detail that really stands out against the seagreen walls. Flanking each window with curtain panels in luscious marigold brings sunshine and a touch of softness to the space. The color palette is lively, soft, and friendly – making it a perfect gathering place for family and friends.
Mixing old and new pieces is part of the subtle charm in this classic dining room, and reflects the age and character of the homes’ older bones. The tall ceilings, decorative molding around the fireplace, and the wide pine boards are classic architectural details from older Colonial Revival homes. Combining the antique demilune console table with turned legs, and the reclaimed barn board dining table, enhance the timeworn appeal of the home.

Using an assortment of painted chairs is increasingly becoming a popular choice for people who want an eclectic look versus the traditional stained “set” look. Kitchen and dining rooms are typically full of activity, and it’s fun to be able to capture that energy through color. We often encounter clients who want painted chairs in a variety of colors, but are wary of the look being too contrived. Or people who want to introduce just a splash of color versus the whole rainbow.
These daring blues and zesty greens create a vivid color board full of cottage interior decorating inspiration. This palette would be perfect for a space where you want to kick up the intensity of color to improve productivity, like an office or study, but don’t want to drown the room in too many combinations. With so many different shades of blues and greens, the possibilities are endless!
Once you soak in the beautiful ocean view just beyond the big windows in this coastal living room, your eye is immediately drawn to the coral coffee table. What a statement it brings to this otherwise quiet and subdued color palette! Introducing the coral accent color to the overall scheme creates an undeniable focal point that brings in a whole new layer of interest to this beach-inspired living room.
Looking for cottage style bedroom ideas? These muted grey, slate, and seafoam hues create a quiet confidence that would be perfect for a cottage style bedroom or sitting area. This color palette offers layers of soft and understated fabrics for upholstery and pillows or for bed linens galore. Any combination of the selected paint colors would be perfect for the wall paint or for select painted pieces to accent the color scheme. White would also be a great paint color or drapery choice to create a crisp contrast among the sea of silversage.
