There is nothing more special than a home with a hearth.  It is a place that provides warmth in the winter and an irreplaceable architectural and design element to any space.  Today's Rooms to Love is a simple cottage style sitting room that boasts an amazing fireplace.  We always love seeing the before and after of a DIY project, but this fireplace is unrecognizable!  Taken from an outdated eye sore to a simple and elegant focal point, this hearth has been given new life.  Using the clap board over the original brick creates a built in feel that provides a more stately look and feel to the whole fireplace.  The slate gray paint is a fantastic choice to finish the makeover, as it looks more refined now, and the color will help to hide the inevitable soot that happens after using it.

We are crazy for this strong cobalt, wood and white color scheme!  This dining room has elements of both coastal and farmhouse style decor mixed together in a spectacular way.  The over-sized windows and lofted ceilings make a grand impression, and also allow the space to fill with light that just pours in from all sides.  The simple black framing along the window casings, exposed wood beams, and trestle table give the space farmhouse charm and character.  Elements like the beadboard walls and ceilings, cobalt blue dining chairs, and metallic chandelier feel more like traditional coastal style choices.  The blend of the two styles is seamless and gives the space a distinct personality.

We are knee deep in snow and more is on the way here in Maine, so for today's rooms to love we chose a cottage style porch to help us banish our winter blues!  This beautiful porch is just a snippet from a stunning home located on Muskoka’s Lake Rosseau in Ontario, Canada. What we love about this cottage style porch, besides the view through the panoramic windows, is the mixture of whites used to create an uninterrupted feeling throughout the space.  The stark white floors, ceilings, and trim all create a crisp and clean backdrop, while the furniture is more weathered and distressed for a lived-in feel.  Classic navy blue brings a nautical feel to the space, which is the perfect color for cushions to help hide the dirt and spills that are inevitable in a sitting area.

This breathtaking kitchen has a lot of farmhouse character with just the right amount of modern amenities.  Elements like the old barn wood flooring, the stone hearth, and built-in cabinetry are features found in traditional colonial homes and preserve the original character of the kitchen.  Whereas the modern amenities, like the marble counter tops, beadboard ceiling design, and crisp white cabinetry are exquisitely layered into the overall design for a high-end look.  To tie the entire look together, the homeowners added a small seating area in front of the fireplace that encompasses both the traditional and casual style of the home.
