[post_content] => A coastal cottage living room turned out in soothing neutral tones like the one above provides a welcome everyday retreat. An understated sand color on the walls sets the overall tone and is echoed in the natural area rug, throw pillows and fireplace tiles. White painted moldings provide a subtle contrast. A comfortable mood deepens with graduated tones from cafe au lait pillows, mink brown cushions, and rustic dark wood pieces such as the driftwood mirror and table. The added beauty of this room is that its low-profile disposition serves as the perfect foundation for changing seasonal decor. A neutral base can easily be dressed up and down for any occasion, especially at the holidays. Just as natural elements like smooth stones on the hearth and seagrass upon the mantel add a coastal twist to this comfy cottage style, this room could easily be readied for Thanksgiving guests with some gourds and corncobs and substituting an orange or harvest gold area rug. Adding deep red velvet pillows and some berries and evergreen boughs on the mantel would in turn set the scene for festive winter meetings. And when spring returns, adding pussy willows, striped pillows in chambray blue and a white painted table in lieu of the driftwood one can freshen the look.

[post_content] => Imagine enjoying a nature walk and finding yourself in an unfamiliar part of the woods just as twilight falls. Suddenly you emerge from the trees to see the glow of a fire in the window of a farmhouse and hear friendly shouted greetings. Welcome to the unfussy farmhouse above, where you are ushered into a century-old living room boasting richly stained original built-ins and a quaint whitewashed brick fireplace. You're given the seat of honor next to the fire, in an antique armchair with plush persimmon upholstery, and handed a drink and an old book to peruse while the owners whip up a hearty supper in the next room. One can dream...This soothing refuge boasts the midnight blue of a mid-autumn evening on the walls, punctuated by plucky orange-red and cinnamon woodwork and floors. A few bright spots of white, namely the slipcovered sofa and painted brickwork, serve to balance the deeply restful mood created by dark blue. Details like the beadboard-backed bookcase and granite hearth reinforce a unique nostalgia, and timelessness supersedes the fad of the moment to make a comfortably classic sitting area. Individuality shines through as the butterfly theme of the print on the mantel is echoed in the throw pillows, and according to preference, this room could change up quite easily with the introduction of a new slipcover or plaid or floral accessories.

As the unofficial end of the summer season draws near, we aren't quite ready to let go... and this converted attic room is just the remedy. A profusion of blues, aquas and whites along with nautical nostalgia provides a quaint hideaway at the end of a day filled with outdoor activities. Covering the main barnboard wall are paintings of grand ships a-sail, salty old skippers, technical sketches and silhouettes. The shipshape sofa creates an unassuming base for comfort while retro and refined matching tufted seats provide a seating twist. The tables are sturdy and unique, possibly flea market finds, not to mention the numerous kitsch mariner statuettes and knick-knacks. The modern lighting fixtures near the peak of the ceiling bring to mind bubbles escaping the roiling waves.
This cozy arrangement could also work in a covered porch area, preferably one with exposed beams. If your nautical wall art collection has not reached this level, you could easily take up half the wall with painted white beadboard or weathered shiplap. This room shows its wooden floors to full advantage, but the furniture could also be drawn together with an area rug, possibly a hand-me-down Oriental or a sun-bleached natural fiber rug. And of course the color scheme can be changed up on a whim by changing out the sofa slipcover and incorporating other throw pillows.
Where is your favorite hideaway at home?

This week we pay tribute to the Red, White and Blue, the winsome and revered trio of colors in the United States flag. Just as this nation is a mix of ethnicities and creeds, our picks above represent a spectrum of styles, shades and tastes, from traditional to edgy decor. From bold, billowy patterns to reserved stripes and solids. . . From understated hues to bold primaries. . . . From white with navy and cherry red to variations such as turquoise and persimmon. . . From a nautical bent to an exotic vibe. . . These rooms all make a patriotic statement, yet can definitely also fit into your everyday repertoire. Happy 4th of July to everyone!

Amazingly airy and welcoming, this restored oceanfront cottage was once used by Cape Cod fisherman as a storehouse for bait and fishing equipment. Perched upon a wharf with direct views of the Atlantic, this cabin disarmingly blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor living. Weathered floor boards and salty, exposed timbers, along with several points of access to the outside, all give a sense of freedom and connection with the sunshine as well as shelter if bad weather happens to blow in.
A large part of the charm of this space is, of course, its ocean view - not an option for all of us! But other elements that add to the carefree comfort are possible to replicate in your own home. Combine pieces with weighty permanence such as well-worn leather club armchairs with breezy antique rattan and wicker chairs. Natural wood and woven textiles are key, but also add doses of seaside hues like teal, ink and royal. White semi-sheer drapes let in light and create a sense of transcending boundaries. In fact, any little touch that will help you capture the feeling of a permanent vacation is worth incorporating.
Do you have a room that is a lot like the outdoors?

As another season of weddings steals upon us, it's comforting to have a place to curl up and browse bridal magazines - or to simply escape from the stress. Either way, this cottage living room has all the necessary elements for success, as in the traditional bridal saying: "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue". Just like a carefully selected bridal trousseau, this sitting area is made up of weathered pieces and hand-me-down heirlooms standing alongside modern textiles.
Achieving a relaxed charm is as easy as mixing slightly different favorites, like a slipcovered sofa with a slightly more formal exposed leg chair. The pairing of a round and square table is nicely echoed in the large round clock and the rectangular shutter wall art. Crisp whites and neutral naturals play with bright accent colors like citrus green and turquoise hues. The antique open front hutch - a real rustic show-stopper - gets a new lease on life with an aqua painted interior. Blending old and new, whether salvaged or newly-found, creates a unique, stay-awhile feel.

Longing to go on a summer picnic or lounge in a plein air bistro? The cheery little dining room pictured above pulls the carefree feeling of outdoor dining into your cottage home. Bringing together a mix of natural textures and bright colors, as well as some mismatched furniture styles, creates a chic yet communal dining area.
Varied seating options create an easy charm, as if chairs have been pulled up impromptu to accommodate any and all who care to break bread. Scattered touches of primary colors flit about the otherwise neutral backdrop like the chirping birds on the curtains, and a bright white and goldenrod runner with coordinating pillows ensure a French country look. The natural bleached rug and primitive wicker pendant lamp also help to bring the outdoors in.Anchoring it all is a rustic dining table without pretension but with plenty of character. Find other trestle table and reclaimed barn wood table ideas by viewing our Farmhouse Tables collection.

Working with a whitewashed canvas is a great way to clear the palate after a diet of wintry darkness. Reinvent your decor for the upcoming spring with splashes of cheery color, like leaf green, against white walls, white floors and even a white bedspread. Remember to experiment: the fresh bedroom cottage look shown above can be created with white plus any color, from aqua to tangerine to goldenrod.
This beachy cottage bedroom was once an enclosed porch, and now looks like a Hemingway-esque retreat. Leaf green textiles, bold wall art, and the large palm frond on the dresser help create a tropical feel. The old weathered bench at the foot of the bed is a twist on the usual hope chest, and invites one to lounge. Painted cottage nightstands, one in green and one in white, add a playful touch. We offer a similar customizable end table (Country Farm Classic End Table) in a variety of colors and stains, as well as apron and leg styles.

Sky blue turns heads. The color of the walls in this farmhouse kitchen play against white tile and cabinetry to energize the space in a quietly fresh way. Crisp and clean, this eat-in kitchen gives off an orderly confidence without looking contrived, a magical element of the Scandinavian style. Drawing from both traditional and modern styles, key architectural elements in this kitchen mesh without giving pause.
A gorgeous white antique enameled corner fireplace rules this cheery kitchen, where everything has its place, from the aqua pitcher and herbs to the incredibly mod pinecone lighting fixture. The weathered farmhouse table grounds the area with its sturdy earthiness and ungrudgingly gives over the spotlight to the glitzy lamp. The shiny coat of white paint on the dining chairs furthers the kitchen's signature lightness. The lesson here is to mix and match without fear, from antique with modern to linear with ornate, simply taking care to keep clutter out of the equation and to have fun.

[post_content] => The winter is fading, but there's still enough left to merit finding a cozy space. Grab a book and a cup of tea and sink into the calm solitude of this deep blue library. This reading nook boasts floor-to-ceiling bookshelves painted in a cadet blue, a fresh change from more commonly seen shades of navy and china blue. Renowned for its calming properties, blue perfectly suits bedrooms, porches and just about anywhere you want to relax. This library's particular hue of blue lends a sense of reassuring solidity, not stuffiness. This small area plays with cool tones and warm: plush apricot pillows and a rusty red occasional table lend a dusting of warmth to the palette. Also, the traditionally tailored sofa juxtaposed with an animal print partner and a rattan coffee table creates a slightly playful and informal area. This room is not taking itself over seriously, and the antique lion figure surveying the scene approves.

When you love pattern and color it can be hard to decide where to play it up and when to tone it down in your cottage home. Today's Rooms to Loveis a great example of how color and style can live together in a balanced and harmonious way.
This fabulous living room is home to style blogger Micheal Wurm, Jr. who wanted this space to be colorful, yet not too intense, so as not to distract from the beautiful architecture. He chose a neutral gray for the walls, which is light enough to blend into the background, and a crisp white to highlight the amazing architectural details in the space, like the built-in bookcases, crown molding, and decorative mantel. He also chose a light charcoal gray for the sofa and chair, again to build a neutral foundation in the space.
Now that the stage had been set, he chose textiles and accessories in a myriad of patterns and colors to bring the space to life. The largest source of color, and the main focal point, is the modern flag print area rug. Everything else in the space, like the puff ottomans, throw pillows, wire baskets, and small accessories, pick up the hues found in the rug including royal blue, electric yellow, and fire engine red.

We love this room because it pulls off a grandness of scale while remaining comfortably cozy. Thanks to its earthy tones and horizontal lines, this true open concept living room harbors no cold pockets of space. The floor to ceiling windows provide a majestic view while the low, sleek lines of the furniture and the simple wooden mantel create a communal feeling. The narrow ledge from the level above also creates a subtle boundary without overshadowing the seating area. The soothing neutrals of the muted brick hearth wall seem to melt down into the perfectly matched hues of the chairs, sofas and area rug. A few well-chosen accessories in warm colors add dimension and a thoughtful symmetrical arrangement cements the look. The tailored silhouettes and mix of wood and fabric create a Scandinavian vibe so perfect for lodge living.

We love this farmhouse living room with its cozy fireplace seating area, use of natural elements and unassuming charm. With couch and armchairs placed to appreciate the fireplace rather than in a more traditional configuration, an intimate grouping takes root. Although turned out mainly in crisp whites, this room is grounded by the warm, honeyed tones of the wood flooring and woven fiber rug. A console table behind the couch unifies the room's warm tones and whites in its semi-distressed state. Rustic pine cones and a horseshoe crab shell work alongside the bright blossoms and leafy green plants to add pinpoints of interest. All these treasured objects, including the juxtaposition of art upon the mantel, are placed in a non-structured yet welcoming way.

What is your favorite quick holiday room makeover?

Airy and welcoming, this restored oceanfront cottage was once used by Cape Cod fisherman as a storehouse. Perched upon a wharf with direct views of the Atlantic, this cabin disarmingly blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor living. Weathered floor boards, exposed timbers and several points of access to the outside all give a sense […]

Crisp and clean, this eat-in kitchen gives off an orderly confidence without looking contrived, a magical element of the Scandinavian style. Surprising elements of the old and new, like a gorgeous white antique enameled corner fireplace and an incredibly mod pinecone lighting fixture, mesh without giving pause. The effect is energizing. #skybluekitchen #scandinavian #farmhousetable https://www.cottagehomefurniture.com/
Renowned for its calming properties, blue perfectly suits bedrooms, porches and just about anywhere you want to relax. This library’s cadet blue lends a sense of reassuring solidity, not stuffiness.
